Spiritual and moral development

The purpose of education, according to current education law in England and Wales is to promote the "spiritual, moral, social, mental and physical development of the pupils at the schools and of society". Since 1992 schools have been subject to an inspection regime that reports on their success at promoting the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils as well as their mental and physical development. There is therefore an increasing range of resources available to aid thinking about spiritual and moral development at school. For a Church of England or Church in Wales school, such thinking cannot be separated from the prime purpose of the school as a religious school.
