Training to teach

The Teacher Training Agency web site at www.canteach.gov.uk has definitive information on teacher training. There are many different routes besides the conventional three year course with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the PGCE (Post-Graduate Certificate of Education). For example, School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) and the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) are both routes that avoid a college-based course.

Further information:

Visit the Teacher Training Agency site at www.canteach.gov.uk.

The London Diocesan Board for Schools sponsors a SCITT.

The Church of England and Church in Wales colleges of higher education offer a great diversity of courses but they all train teachers. Between them the Church colleges train a quarter of all teachers. You can find out more about the Church colleges at the web site of The Council of Church Colleges, www.churchcolleges.org.
