To teach in a maintained school in England or Wales - that is a school that receives significant Government grant through the Local Education Authority (LEA) - whether a Church school or a community school, it is necessary to be registered with the General Teaching Council (GTC). More information about registering to teach in England can be found at www.gtce.org.uk; for registering to teach in Wales see www.gtcw.org.uk There is also a GTC for Scotland. The English and Welsh GTCs were established by Act of Parliament and began work in the year 2000.
The GTCs not only register teachers, they support those in training to be teachers, set standards for the teaching profession and have a disciplinary function. For example, if a teacher is dismissed or allowed to resign in lieu of a disciplinary process, the employing authority (usually the LEA, but the governing body supported by the diocesan board of education in the case of a voluntary aided school) must refer the matter to the GTC for its own disciplinary processes. The GTC can reprimand a teacher, register a teacher under some condition or conditions or remove the teacher's name from the register temporarily or permanently (though the person has an appeal after a number of years, even against permanent deregistration).
Teachers in independent schools in England and Wales may register with the relevant GTC but do not need to do so.
