More on school chaplaincy

The role of clergy in a Church school, perhaps as governors, as leaders of worship, teachers, providers of informal support, pastors and in many other ways cannot be overestimated.

In The Way ahead, chapter 7, "The ministry, the Church and the parish" (PDF, 62 KB) deals with the relationship between the parish church and the school. The National Society publication Churches Serving Schools further explores this relationship, and provides some resources for churches to use, some of which are made available online in the Parishes section of this web site.

Many schools employ a chaplain, usually a priest, who also teaches part-time. Other (usually secondary) schools have a relationship with a number of local parishes and a team of chaplains.

Many Anglican independent schools employ one or more priests as chaplains. There is mutual support for them through the Chaplains Conference at www.schoolchaplains.org.uk.

The Bishop of Ramsbury, the Right Reverend Peter Hullah, himself a former school chaplain and headmaster, is the Archbishop of Canterbury's representative for school chaplains.

The Culham Clergy and RE web site provides useful resources for clergy working in and with schools at www.culham.info/care/
