Since 2002 the number of Church of England voluntary aided (VA) schools has increased by 21; there are 6 fewer voluntary controlled (VC) and Foundation schools; some have switched to VA, others have become Academies. This is a net gain of 15 Church of England Secondary schools in the context of an overall reduction in the number of all maintained secondary schools of 48.
A similar effect can be seen in the pupil numbers at Church of England secondary schools. Since 2002, the number of pupils in our VA schools has increased by 8,833; the number in VC schools has declined by 925 and the number in Foundation schools has declined by 66. That is a net gain of 7,842 pupils in Church of England Secondary school pupils since 2002, representing the expansion of existing and new schools post-Dearing. The net effect is that the number of pupils in Church of England Secondary schools has increased from 4.8% of all secondary school children in 2002 to 4.9%.
Taking the longer term view, since 2000, the number of children in Church of England Secondary schools has increased overall by nearly 14,000 (9.3%).

There are plans to build new City Academies in Leicester, Leeds, London and Manchester. In addition, the National Society is aware of definite plans to open a further 14 voluntary aided secondary schools within the next few years, and of discussions about more than 30 possible new or expanded schools.
