The ethos of a Church school will always be difficult to define. This section of the web site considers those aspects of school life that make a contribution to its ethos. It ranges from the very practical - for example, the information about ethos that is required in school documentation - to more wide ranging discussions on the areas of spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
Spiritual
development
The spiritual development of pupils should lie at the
heart of the curriculum of a Church school. Often,
however, it is perceived as the most challenging aspect
of a school's ethos. This section is a supportive guide
for teachers and governors and discusses both the
spiritual values on which a Church school is based and
the spiritual development of pupils.
Moral
development
Schools play an important part in helping young people to
learn the difference between right and wrong. This
section is a supportive guide for teachers and governors
and discusses both the moral values on which a Church
school is based and the moral development of pupils. The
section includes material on sex education.
Social
development
Schools play an important part in helping young people to
develop sound social skills and to make a positive
contribution in community life. This section is a
supportive guide for teachers and governors and discusses
both the Christian values on which a Church school is
based and the social development of its pupils.
Cultural
Development
Schools play an important part in helping young people to
recognize the value and richness of cultural diversity in
Britain. This section is a supportive guide for teachers
and governors who wish to engender an ethos that
encourages respect and acceptance of cultural
diversity.
Discipline
policies
This section outlines the law regarding the
responsibilities of the governing body and the
headteacher to ensure that discipline policies are in
place.
Ethos
statement
All schools that have a religious character must have an
ethos statement. This forms part of the Instrument of
Government. From this statement the governors will have
derived a mission statement or set of aims for the
school. This section is a supportive guide for teachers
and governors who are charged with compiling the school's
ethos statement.
