Supporting teachers

The Church should affirm Christian teachers through pastoral visits to schools... And through inviting Christian teachers in Church and Community schools, including Special Schools to appropriate events.

Dioceses should show the importance the Church attributes to the appointment of headteachers by a Service of commissioning of the kind that has been agreed in some dioceses.

Recommendations from The Way ahead

It is a very important part of all churches' pastoral work to support those members of the congregation who are undertaking responsible tasks which are or could be understood as part of their Christian discipleship and ministry. One of the most common of these tasks is the work of teaching. Despite the many pressures involved and the arguments of some who take a secular view of the world of education, there are still a very high proportion of Christians among the teachers in this country and many of them have a clear understanding of their work as a Christian vocation. It is very important therefore, that the Church takes this vocation seriously and is seen to support it.

The material provided below is taken from Churches Serving Schools (Lankshear, CHP, 2002), a guide that aims to help churches to support their local schools. The book also contains resources such as prayers and commissioning services.
