The Church of England is organized into two provinces, each led by an archbishop (Canterbury for the Southern Province and York for the Northern). Together these two provinces cover England, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and even a small part of Wales. Each province is built from a number of dioceses. There are 43 in England.
The Church in Wales has six dioceses: Bangor, Llandaff, Monmouth, St Asaph, St David's and Swansea & Brecon.
For further information about each diocese of England and Wales, including the area covered, the number of church schools, and where to locate the Diocesan Director of Education, use Contact a diocese.
The DBE measure was passed by the General Synod of the Church of England in 1991 to make provision for the Diocesan Boards of Education.
